Day 20 - Mitchell (The Town not the Kid)

Cloudy morning sunrise in Longreach.

As Willie Nelson would say "On the road again".

Today we are travelling through lots of small towns between Longreach and tonights camp at Mitchell.

Ilfracombe had a long line of old trucks, farm machinery
etc. along the side of the road like an outdoor museum.

Augathella's claim to fame "Meat Ant Country".

The sign on the left is of the Cosmos Meatant, unfortunately we didn't have time to dig deaper in Augathella.

We had to be very careful of car eating cows along the way.

The weather turned bleak and we were worried it was going to be a wet camp tonight.  So far we have avoided any rain!

The sky was black and the wind whipped up............. lucky for us we were on the edge and only got a few drops.

Shearing shed in full swing.

Neil Turner Weir free camp.

Tonight we are free camping at Neil Turner Weir on the outskirts of the small country town of Mitchell.

Great camp with plenty of room, very clean public toilets, bins etc.
Our Mitchell in Mitchell.

Mitchell is a nice little town, and we would have enjoyed a full day here, there are Artesian pools in town, some shops, IGA, bakery, cafe, pub and playground.

There are a lot of photos of the town name since it's called Mitchell.

No playground back at camp, so the boys made their own fun.

Beautiful sunset over the weir to end our day.

Today we travelled about 600kms, there were so many interesting little towns to check out along the way that you could easily spend a few days travelling this distance, if you didn't have a job to get back to!

  1. We have checked out many of these little towns and you are right, you could spend quite a bit of time exploring them all, some are very interesting. Pity you didn't have time and swimmers because the artesian pools in Blackall and Mitchell are worth a nice log soak.
